Overview of Allen-Bradley 1791-0A32

The Allen-Bradley 1791-0A32 is a discontinued 120V AC discrete output module from the 1791 Block I/O product line. Designed as a self-contained remote I/O device, it integrates a power supply, programmable controller interface, and signal conditioning circuitry into a compact form factor measuring 6.95 x 4.35 x 3.85 inches.

This module functions as a slave device in a distributed I/O configuration, supporting the Remote I/O (RIO) protocol for direct communication with RIO scanners. It is currently listed as obsolete by the manufacturer, with discontinuation noted in 2015.

Key Features

The 1791-0A32 features 32 discrete AC output channels organized into four groups of eight channels each. It supports both vertical and horizontal mounting orientations and includes status indicators on the front cover to assist with troubleshooting and configuration.

The module includes internal protection and an interior power supply, requiring an external power source of 85-132V AC. It is designed to energize a variety of electrical loads, including motor starters, solenoid-actuated devices, indicators, and signaling devices.

Performance and Capacity

Rated for a nominal output voltage of 120V AC, the module operates within a voltage range of 20-132V AC. The maximum on-state current is 50 mA per output, with a minimum on-state current of 50 mA per output. The maximum on-state voltage drop is 1.5V peak at 300 mA.

Output signal delay is 8.3 ms at 60 Hz for the ON state and 10.0 ms at 50 Hz for the OFF state. The module can handle a surge current of 10 A for 50 ms, repeatable every 2 seconds, and has an OFF-state leakage current of 3 mA. The operational temperature range is 0 to 60 degrees Celsius.

Installation and Compatibility

The 1791-0A32 is compatible with a variety of Allen-Bradley controllers, including the PLC-2, PLC-3, and PLC-5/20 families. Specific compatible scanner modules include the 1771-SN, 1772-SD, 1772-SD2, 1775-S5, and 1775-SR5. Power connections are made via terminals L1, N, and GND, while RIO connections use terminals BLU, CLR, and SHD located on the left side of the module.

Installation requires setting the I/O rack number and group switch assembly, which are accessible by opening the front cover. The module supports the Remote I/O (RIO) protocol, allowing it to function as a distributed I/O station within a network.

Applications and Industries

As a high-density AC output module, the 1791-0A32 is suitable for industrial automation applications requiring the control of multiple AC loads. It is commonly used in manufacturing, process control, and machine control environments where reliable switching of motor starters and solenoids is required.

The module's compact design and integrated power supply make it a cost-effective solution for expanding I/O capacity in existing PLC systems, particularly in applications where space is limited and vertical or horizontal mounting flexibility is needed.
